India and its Space Achievements
India, a country so vast, accommodates a population of 1.38 billion people living up to its name of being the 7th largest country in the world. It has the oldest civilization in the world and is one of the most diverse countries consisting of people from various religions, races, colours etc. Over the years, India has been growing steadily in the fields of Science, Technology, Sports, Agriculture, Economy etc. Today, on the 15th of August, 2022, let us celebrate our 76th Independence Day by commemorating the achievements of our motherland, India, in the field of astronomy. ISRO, short for the Indian Space Research Organization, has significantly contributed to India’s growth in the field of space technology. Under the leadership of the eleven chairmen of ISRO to date, it reached great heights by completing various Launches- vehicle missions, satellite missions, technology demonstration missions etc. An organization that started its engines in 1969 has completed over 166 missions and is now one of the largest and most successful space agencies in the world. Some of the notable achievements of ISRO include the successful launching of Chandrayaan-2, India's second lunar mission, RISAT-2B, the cloud-proof earth observation satellite, GSAT-7A 'Indian Angry Bird' satellite to boost defense communication, and testing of the Crew Escape System which is crucial for human spaceflights. Out of the 166 missions that ISRO has completed, 53 of them (23 Launch vehicle missions, 23 satellite missions & 7 technology demonstration missions) have been accomplished from May 2014 to April 2018. During this period, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has completed 17 flights and has successfully orbited 224 satellites with a total mass of 19.2 tonnes in orbit. PSLV also created history by deploying 104 satellites in a single launch. This remarkable exploit was a new moment of pride for Science, the space community, and the country. It is not only in the field of star gazing that ISRO has helped India to grow but also in various fields such as telecommunication, SATCOM & SATNAV Applications, Telemedicine, Earth observation and geospatial applications etc. All these achievements that I have said so far do not even add up to half of the total achievements of ISRO so far. The Indian Space Research Organization, not only helped India to grow significantly in the field of science, technology and astronomy but also contributed to the community of the star-gazers and science in general.
